Coffee... ahh the great debate of its benefits vs its down falls exposed.

Lets take a look at some of its key benefits .. It is actually loaded with antioxidants & science has proven some advantages to the morning caffeine craving...

Improves energy levels & increases productivity allowing you to think clearer & make more decisive smarter choices. Coffee improves brain function lifting mood, stimulating memory & increasing energy levels.

Cut's down symptoms of Pain by blocking pain receptor's in the brain. It also blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine, when this happens, the amount of the other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine & dopamine actually uptake their levels and increase, leading to enhanced firing of synapses.

Helps you burn Fat... a natural raw substance that aids in fat burning, studies indicate that caffeine boosts the metabolic rate by 11%.

On the flip side... The argument continues. But as I have found that a lot of these side effects were related to over consumption. So therefore it would indicate that its about all in moderation

Most of the research articles I read indicates whilst there were 6 cons to the coffee consumption there would be 12 pro's outweighing the argument that it is actually not that bad for you. Maybe I am biased, as I can not really live without my morning fix of the wonderful vice.

Here are some of the disadvantages I uncovered in my research to find the truth to this argument that has been fought for centuries..

Coffee tends to stimulate the adrenal glands. In some cases people whom have over consumed the coffee intake on a daily basis have caused damage to the adrenal glands (bodies natural energy maker) and then develop a reliance on needing coffee to help with that energy boost. This again is all about in moderation.

Coffee can kill you. Yes thats right... drink 80-100 cups (23Litres) in one short little cafe visit & the dose will be lethal. Turns out your body can't handle 10-13 grams of caffeine in one short sitting. By the way, before you reach this point i am sure you will be vomiting.. 23 Litres is a lot of liquid to consume, even just drinking 23 litres of H2O can kill you.

Bad quality coffee can have a lot of toxic impurities in it. These will cause headache, nausea & general anxiety feeling. This is caused by beans that have been over ripped, even just one small ruined bean can enable your coffee to be toxic. This is why it is worth investing into high quality, locally sourced coffee. Even asking your local barrister about the blend, & if it is sourced from a reputable supplier.

As we have probable all experienced before... the sleepless night. Coffee can lead to insomnia & restlessness.. this is purely the caffeine taking effect here. If you don't go over the recommended daily caffeine hit of 400 milligrams / 4 cups daily you should not experience these side effects. However if your a caffeine sensitive soul like myself, id lay lo on the consumption, especially after 2pm. You know your body, its not hard to work out when you've over done it. Heart palpitations sit in, feelings of anxiety... hello body saying "too much caffeine". Yet for some this is what gets us through. the hit in the morning "wake me up".

Pregnant ladies... don't drink more then one cup per day. Studies indicate that the effect on the foetus is unknown, it is still a grey area like a lot of in utero studies. I'd say the baby would be pretty sensitive to the caffeine hit, I know with my two pregnancies my bubba's would jump around like crazy after a am coffee, i decided to just not drink it all all in my pregnancies. I just wasn't sure what effect it would have.

Children & drinking coffee... the little babycuionno that is purely made from milk.. go for it. However coffee for your kiddies... not so cool. Studies have indicated that it increases nervous tension, anxiety & worrying in children, they are unable to focus in school as well & the damage to the undeveloped adrenal glands is unknown. Studies also revealed that it increased bedwetting in children.

Withdrawals when quitting, I am sure you have probable experienced this before, go one day with out a coffee & experience a head ache. as the body relies on this addiction, then a day with out it, symptoms of nausea & headaches can occur when trying to reduce the intake or cutback completely.

So is the verdict out... Good vs bad. A lot of us can't live without our daily coffee fix. To me, the science indicates a lot more health benefits by preventing disease, boosting your cognitive function & helping with weight loss. The scale tips towards more advantages than disadvantage's. If consuming in moderation. "enjoy your fresh brew"
